It is an issue of respect for the flag, and is codified in 36 U.S.C. 173-178, also known as the US Flag Code. The pertinent section is here:

§174. Time and occasions for display:

(a) Display on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in open; night display:

It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

I think it is a respect issue. I always think it is neat to see the flag lit up at night. It makes me remember what it stands for! Too many people do not respect the flag anymore.

I have an answer. It may not be the correct answer that I learned in school but it is the one important to me.
The American flag should be illuminated at night as a show of respect to our country and as respect to all whom have fought and or died for our country.
Thank you
