What are the crucial jobs for the Navy right now? I'm pretty sure "crucial" is not the right term to describe them, but I'm talking about the jobs they need the most at this time. I'm sorry I can't think of the right term right now. Thanks for any information.

Maybe they're referred to as "critical" jobs. I'm still not sure though. Thanks.

Your lines scores on the ASVAB determine which ratings you are eligible for.

the problem with 'critical' ratings and NECs is that they vary. five years ago, the Navy was depsperate for MAs, so depsperate in fact that they started allowing people to enlist straight in as MA, instead of crossrating from other fields. Now, there is a glut of them and advancement sucks.

Some ratings have great advancement up until say, E5, but then somebody has to die or retire before you can make E6.

your recruiter will try and steer you towards the fields most in need of bodies assuming you qualify for them.

It's far more imprtant to choose a rating based on what you will enjoy doing for the next 4-6 years instead.

If you want to make a career of the Navy, I suggest you first obtain a degree in something, then enlist. College educated recruits in many cases skip past a lot of the common basic training and head straight into officer's school, where upon completion, you walk out a Lieutenant, Captain--or better.

Otherwise, talk with a reputable Navy recruiter and ask for available jobs that can be applied with merit in the civillian sector.

Bear in mind: if you go THIS route, you'll only be offered the jobs your TEST SCORES qualify you for. So if your test scores quailify you ONLY for Navy applicable jobs that won't carry over in the civillian sector, thank the Navy for their time and walk out.

The Navy is actually becomming overmanned at this point, most ratings are locked and it is very hard to advance. Talk to a recruiter, they will tell you which ratings have the highest and lowest retention rates. Good Luck and Go Navy! Beat Army!
