People have something called a circadian cycle or an "internal clock." This circadian cycle basically causes you to wake up at the same time every morning. So, for instance, you went to bed at 9:00 instead of 10:30, then you would wake up at the same time the next morning. Has your exposure to sunlight changed recently? From what I've read, your eyes need approximately 2 hours of exposure to bright light everyday to recalibrate your internal clock. If you've been getting less sunlight everyday, then that could be a possible cause.

Somewhere in a parallel universe, you have a date with Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome at 3 A. M. He's probably waking up each night at the same hour, and, like you, can't figure out why. So, I would suggest you hitch a ride on a starship and go see him. That should eliminate the fitfull sleep pattern you've developed.

It could just be part of your regular sleep cycle. This happens. Sleep isn't one flat state. You go up in down in the depth of your sleep. Perhaps your body's just adjusting to something that makes it want to wake up for a brief period after a few hours.
If this really bothers you, try to give yourself a regular sleep pattern. Always go to bed and get up the same time every day. If you fluctuate it, your body can get confused and this could be your problem. Try sleeping with some sort of music on repeat. The constant repitition as you sleep could help keep you there (I like to sleep to music from Lord of the Rings....but that's just me).
If the problem persists, see a doctor.

When I was staying up late every night, it was terribly difficult to get up when I was supposed to. But recently I've been sleeping early, and waking up early. Almost exactly the same time every morning. Your body has a clock, and it woke up when it was ready.
As for the 3 in the morning...well, have you been taking afternoon naps, or drinking too much caffeine?

You body is used to waking up at time. You could eliminate caffeine before you go sleep, TV, having a nice calm atmosphere.
Maybe you can go to a sleep therapist and find out why you are waking up at that time.
Have you had any traumatic experiences lately or stressed out at work?
I know i have that problem of sleep early. I can't sleep until late, but i will get up on time if I have to get early. Not to sure why, I guess I am insomniac. :(
