It depends on the type of bird and where you get the "grass". Be careful, pesticides, bugs and fungus's can kill a bird so I wouldn't chance it with out talking to a vet..

You can grow wheat grass very easily. Plant some in a flower pot, let it grow, and clip some to put in their food dish on top of their food. It's loaded with good stuff for your birds, and most of them like it.
There is also a product you can find in Bird supply stores and online called "LeGrass Cafe'".
It's a little "Cup O Soup" type container, but it contains a potting medium and what grass seeds. Just add water and out in a sunny window and you've got grass.
Try it, it's fun.
Good Luck.

My caged birds all like Orchard Grass that I buy at my local pet shop for my guinea pig. It doesn't hurt them, but I wouuld not recomend giving fresh grass out of the yard. There might be pesticides on the grass that can kill your birds.

Well I just can't refuse the smart *** answer to your question,,,, they only need grass if they are addicted and do they like it,, oh hell yeah!!!!!
Really tho, they do not 'have' to have it,,, you can give your birds cleaned produce from the stores, like lettuce, carrots and celery. I have a Quaker Parrot and he does need greens of various sorts, so veggies are in his diet. I do want to try the grow my own grass (here we go again! Flashbacks) as suggested above.
Thanks for the memories! LOL

hi if the bird is a seed eater yes ,they love seedling grass which i would gather and hang bunches up in the avairy but not any more with some of the fertilisers used by the farmers and the threat of avian flu still on the horizon.
a footnote on avian flu.
because we have little media coverage now it has not gone away we will have a pandemic.

they love it and it gives them some variety
grow your own - take several small pots, add potting soil
and sprinkle with your bird seed, water and place in sunny spot
when sprouted, give the whole pot to you bird, after he clips it off
then put it back to grow some more and give your bird another fresh pot
