When you open a file, edit it and then save it, if the file size has increased, it may not fit into the same space it was in before. So the computer moves it somewhere else. When you have done this lots of times, and your files are all over the place, the computer takes longer to find them. This is called being fragmented, when you defragment your drive it makes room for all the things to go in the right place by moving things around on the drive. Then when it's finished your pc should run things quicker.
Hope this helps

Windows does a horrible job of storing data on your hard drive. Similar data or data from the same programs often get scattered all over the place. Windows is smart enough to know where it puts everything, but over time the data is so fragmented that it takes Windows longer and longer to retrieve it. This is why programs that use to run fast and smooth seem to bog down over time. The defragmenter goes through he hard drive and puts the fragmented pieces back in order which makes it faster and easier for Windows to retrieve it. Defragment your hard drives at least once a week for improved performance.

you probably mean disk defragmenter because I don't know about any disk fragmenter. anyway, disk defragmenter rearranges items on you hard disk to make programs run faster. to see if your disk needs to be defragmented, go to start-control panel-performance and maintenance-pick the last task that says rearrange items on you hard disk to make programs run faster-then click on your hard drive and click analyze. if the report says you don't need to defragment your drive, your fine. but if the report says you need to defragment your drive, then do it. the duration of the defragmentation depends on how fragmented your drive is & the drive's capacity. lastly, depending on how much you load applications, programs, use your computer, etc, I would recommend running an analysis for defragmenting your drive once a week if you want optimum performance.

The disk defragmentor is a program that should be ran about every 2 weeks. What it does is compacts files on your pc and will greatly improve the performance if done reguarly. Also it is good to run disk cleanup every week as it cleans up and deletes unnecasary files on the hard drive.
