I am pretty sure that when I was a kid, my dad did it a few time on some cords. He would buy a spare plug the you would put the stripped wires of the cord into, then close the flap down. Do they still make these things, what are they called, where can I find them and is there anything else I should understand about them before I buy and install it?

My puppy chewed the cord on an extra tv my mom gave me, and I want to use it so, I need to fix it.

yes you can buy replacement plugs. however you must be sure that you connect the wire to the large prong of a two wire plug, the same, as with the origional plug. otherwise you will create a hot chassis, and an electrocution hazzard. if it is a three wire with a ground plug they must all be correctly connected. if you are not sure don't do it. and try and find someone who is familiar enough to be competent.

Power Cord Replacement Plug

Replacing the mains cable is in most cases a simple thing to do. It will however require the removal of the back of the TV to be done properly and make a safe repair. This is where it can get potentially dangerous if you are not suitabley skilled. A typical CRT television will have voltages in the region 25,000 volts upwards on the tube anode and a few thousand on the tube base and line output stages. It will maintain these voltages charged up inside long after it has been switched off. You can get hurt! It will not be an expensive job but I'd leave it to a professional or someone who knows their way around electronic equipment

It's a very simple splice, all you need is a spare plug and some 12 Gauge wire nuts and some black electrical tape. Cut the old plug off, strip back some of the insulation of the wires, should have a hot, neural and a ground, sometimes colored Black, White and Green. Anyways you just have to match the colors back up and Wire nut the new cord on. Don't forget to wrap all of the splices in electrical tape. it's that simple.

You can indeed. Most televisions have a 2-wire cord, and putting a plug on one of these is easy. Any hardware store can sell you one for two or three bucks. The plug will have two screws; strip the insulation from the wires for about half an inch and put one wire under each screw. Tighten them snugly, put the plug back together, and enjoy.

you can replace the cord. if the dog chewed the very end of the cord up you can just get what is commonly referred to as a male cord cap, if on the other hand it chewed it up closer to the tv you will need to get a 120 volt 15 amp "pigtail". either case both are available at about any local hardware store. you may want to consult a licensed electrician or your everyday tv repairman.

As far as I know they still make them. A hardware store should carry them in the electrical department.

Make sure the plug can carry the electrical load your TV needs or there could be a fire hazard. Most will, but just check to make sure. A good hardware store should be able to advise you, and these plugs are not expensive.

I've replaced several of them.

you can buy the spare cords for tv's at most walmart, radioshack, kmart, or even grocery stores. Radioshack has a nice version for 3.99 that has easy-to-install "quik-connects"
