Whwn the baby is in there it's in a sac with a cord coming out of it's belly button. The cord goes through the sac to the placenta. The placenta is attached to the uterine wall. When the baby is born, all that stuff comes out and there is an open sore where the placenta was attached tp the uterus. That sore is what is bleeding. That is why some women pass clots. They sometimes fall off in the healing process.

As many people have pointed out about the placenta, it is the baby's source of food while inside the mother. However, some of the bleeding occurs from actual injury to the vaginal walls as the baby's head and body come through. You're never the same after that. Injury to the outer mouth of the vagina is common as well, where there's tearing. Usually the doctor will stitch that up, and the bleeding from that doesn't last as long.

Each month the uterus builds up a layer of blood vessel rich tissue in preparation for a pregnancy and each month that tissue is sluffed in a period...

When a woman is pregnant that layer of tissue continues to grow with the fetus the tissue provides a blood supply for the placents which in turn provides the nourishment for the growing fetus... When the baby is born that accumulation of tissue is no longer needed and is sluffed off just as the tissue sluffs off if a pregnancy doesn't occur that month...

It's the uterus's way of clearing itself out so it is ready to be used for another pregnancy in the future..

It is called lochia and it is the left over stuff after having the baby. You only discharge a big majority of it in the afterbirth, but you still have some minor stuff left over.

Because nine months worth of uterine lining has to be shed..think of it as a 6 week long period that just gets smellier and funkier as you go.
Ugh.
