You need to tell yourself, because you know this to be true, that your physical symptoms; erratic heart beat, fight or flight feeling, heavy breathing, fidgeting, pulse, temperature, are all a result of a reaction your brain is responding to,,,not what your brain is seeing or finds logical. YOU are at no physical risk for injury, no need for alarm, but this is one of those situations where your mind overrides, your senses.

Do a light medial task,, that is repetitive.. and focus on it.. try darting your eyes from one corner of the room that you are in, (look up at the ceiling, focus on one corner) , then draw an adjacent line to the other corner. Allow your mind to focus on this action several times. Remember, whatever it takes to conquer these attacks, only makes you more powerful the next time, so try anything, and any given suggestions. Gain control and focus!

Now,, tell yourself ALOUD, that there is nothing to worry about,, (insert your name here) and go back to the repetitive vision exercise. You will grow weary of this, but it does offer a calming effect, and this single action can reduce your heart rate.

It's all about understanding how we get panic attacks, not our bodies reactions to them.. this is what we focus on more.. but I'll assure you now, if you know what causes them, and know how to deal with them, they can subside.

Remember panic attacks don't last for several days, they occur in sessions, or intervals.. this WILL pass, and you have to endure it,, but you can fight it,, and get mad about it, to over power it. and that's what I advise you to do. In my opinions, medications just make you calmer, but do not deal with the issue of what causes them,, so I want to offer you tools to deal with it.

I wish you well and if you need me,, please leave an additional comment on your inquiry. Good luck and my best to you.

Ok, several things. I have been there. I know what your going through. This is not something you can THINK yourself out of. When you feel one hitting. Close your eyes and make yourself take deep, slow breaths. If you feel lighteaded, sit down. Some people with panic attacks have a trigger such as a certain place, an object, another person.. etc. See if you can identify something that triggers yours. Not everyone has a specific trigger. This is one of those things that is self perpetuating, meaning that if you have had one in a certain place or circumstance, you are likely to remember it and be anxious about that place again.. thus you get scared and boom. .it happens and reinfores itself I understand your reluctance for medication. But I was unable to stop them myself. I got to the point where I was having several a week, I would nearly pass out, and it was interfereing with my job. At the very least, see your doc, tell him or her exactly what is happening and when. You will get a complete physical. There are actualy medical conditions that cause panic attack symptoms. If this is ruled out, consider a low dose of meds. It has done wonders for me. I went from having many awuful attacks a week (that would leave me flustered and scattered all day) to having no attacks for 2 years. I know these are very distressing and troubling. But be proactive. Good luck hun.

First of all dear, your not having a severe panic attack or you would not even be able to focus long enough to type a question on Yahoo. I have no doubt your having anxiety, and perhaps, a milder form of panic than severe. Try relaxing, if you have someone with you, tell them what's going on. If your alone, perhaps call a friend. If none of this is possible, try focusing on a happy time in your life, a safe place for your mind to go and try and calm down. Also if this doesn't work, go to an emergency room. Panic Attacks are very scary, I know I have them. Perhaps you need some mild form of medication. I went years without treatment. I finally gave in and confided in my medical doctor, and he began a medication regimen for me, didn't cure me, but sure helped. Take care. Best of luck

Panic attacks are transient. In other words they will pass. i had suffered from PA for many years to the degree of interferreing with my daily activities and oppurtunities. i was placed on meds but why did I take a med that would effect me 24hrs/7 days a week when a PA might only occur at random may be 2x week. So I worked on realizing that the onset of a PA I have no control of but when I had the attack then if I was able to recognize what was happening, then i had some control. if you are able to type and pay attention to this site then your not in to bad a shape at this time and just hang on and ride out the storm. I know its easier said then done but I was one of the lucky ones who eirther out grew but I was in my 50s when I reached this comfort level and my 1st PA was at the age of 14yr and in thoses days it was unheard up. it was always'Just your nerves". Know that the onset of a PA can and actually is usaully un provoked and cathes you off guard. If you can narrow down what you think precipates these attacks then its really not a PA but an aniexty attack which may feel the same but is a diferent ordeal. A PA comes on unsuspected with a short aura at times. There is some ideas about the orgin of PA. evry one has a skip or a change in thier heartrate. some fokls are sensitive to these changes and some are not for us folks who are sensitive out brain takes these changes as a threat and then without any reason to us. we go into a fight syndrome known as the Sympathetic nervous response. main thing about PA is again know that its not all in your head, its not your imagination and most of all yuor not CRAZY. Its a true physiological response to some changes your are going through. I am sorry you are having an attack and hope this gives you some relief. I will also add that I have no idea who,how old or anything about you but i will say as a word of advice stay away from street drugs like coke, speed, diet pills, Ice and never mess with hulligenics. These will almost always increase the freg of PA. but as an old er fella i just state. All street drugs are bad for your physical and mental health So stay clean and keep your head. Sorry did not mean to preach...

Are you sure its a Panic Attack? or maybe you are just a bit anxious? If you become somewhat dis oriented and finding it hard to breathe get the paper sac ready to breathe in or you may hyperventilate and pass out. If just a bit hyped up try to do something physical,I start to run and run until I just cant go anymore, it helps alto

Get a brown paper bag and remember it only last for 20 minutes. Breathe into the bag. Lay down and relax.

Sometimes it helps to lie down and breathe slowly. Think about a fashion show. Listen to your heart pumping and imagine it slowing down.

Run. Do jumping jacks. Do any kind of aerobic exercise. This will change your breathing and heart rate, and bring you back to normal.
