They are both amazing books, so it's hard to pick one over the other. They both have exciting plots that keep you on the edge of your seat. They are both well-written, by expert writers who are both well-educated in the classics. They both play with themes of power vs. courage, of selfishness vs. sacrifice, and generally of good vs. evil.

Harry Potter is definitely easier to read, so are easier for children to read. However, I have seen the LOTR trilogy in the hands of 6th and 7th graders who are loving them, so maybe I'm not giving kids enough credit.

I think that Harry Potter resonates more with readers in the 20th century, as JK Rowling satirizes the institutions of schools, governments, media, etc, in a way that we relate to. LOTR uses themes that are more old-fashioned, such as industrialization ("his mind has turned to wheels and metal").

I honestly can't pick, because they are both so good.

Lord of the Rings
Return of the King as a movie is way better in terms of depth and characterization. Harry potter movies are enjoyable but as a movie they are not in the same quality level.
