It depends on the car. My light comes on when I have 2.5 gallons left, so I can go at least 50 miles.
The manual to your car should tell you how many gallons of gas you have when the light turns on.

It depends really, not only on the mileage of your car, but also how you are driving, especially during the time when your light goes on. You lose gas and mileage during stop and go traffic, especially during rush hour and such because you brake, then hit the acceleration, then brake, etc. This repeated process wastes your gas faster than just driving without braking. So I would be extra careful and quickly refuel when the light turns on.

it really depends on what your driving. if your driving an Chevey TrailBlazer, Jeep Wrangler, anything toyota truck Suv, anything from the 80's, then you probably wont get that far. But say your driving like a sadan, most mini-vans, a coupe anything small, then your probably good for 20-30 miles.

It would depend on the car make and model also the size of tank. but be aware that if you let your car run low on gas alot you can get trash in the filter and it can give you more problems than you want.

I've heard 10 miles, but I'm not much of a whiz when it comes to vehicles. Good question.
