Bound's hubby here:

If you are talking a rimfire rifle, the .22 Long Rifle wins hands down.

But, if you are talking center-fire rifle, I would have to recommend the .308 Winchester.

The .308 Winchester is the the rifleman as the .38 Special is to the pistol shooter. Both are extremely accurate and affordable to shoot. The .308 does everything the .30-06 does, but for less with less bang. The .308 is 1/2" shorter, 100 fps slower, but can be used on any North American game.

If I could have only 1 centerfire rifle, it would be a .308. But I sure am glad I live in America, and I am not limited to only 1 rifle! My second place choice would be the M1903A3 Springfield in .30-06.

For North American game? Definitely the .30-06 Springfield as far as penetration, velocity, and energy are concerned. Expansion is a function of bullet design.

A very close second, as far as penetration, velocity and energy are concerned is the .308 Winchester (AKA: 7.62x51 NATO). Because 7.62x51 NATO ammo is plentiful and cheap from Army surplus stores the .308 would have a slight edge on cost to shoot. Sometimes you can still find .30-06 Army surplus ammo, but it may be way too old to be reliable.

Remember though, unless you are just shooting varmints Army surplus ammo is not the best type for hunting large game. There is also a wide range of excellent hunting ammo for either caliber.

I personally like the 30-30 or the 30-06. I just bought a box of each to sight in my rifles. They were about $13 a box. Both have the power to take down about anything in north america.

Definitely has to be the .22 long rifle. A well placed shot will work for most North American game, Ammo is cheap and easy to carry. It's accurate out to 250-300 yards( but low on energy at that distance). If I had to choose only one, that would be it in a Ruger 10/22.

30-06 without a doubt for all North American big game. 7mm mag in close second. Anything larger and it's just an ego booster and shoulder bruiser. Both calibers have very wide selections of ammo, and are not as expensive as alot of the larger calibers.
