for some time now, my legs have been swollen. its usually from the ankle to the knee. My leg feels really tight, but no pain, and im not swollen anywhere else. Someone told me it might be that I eat too much salt, dont drink enough water and they gave me a few other reasons. But im not too sure, and if anyone knows a real good way to get rid of the swelling that would be awesome too!! thanks!

Leg swelling is not to be ignored as it may worsen. The reasons of leg swelling lie elsewhere rather in the legs as such. Many of such swellings are because of a heart, kidney, liver, blood (anaemia), or endocrinal (thyroid). There it becomes imperative to get your checkup done at the earliest to know what exactly is the cause of your leg swelling and appropriate measures will have to be taken. As far as the management of leg swelling per se is concerned, it may be relieved within a few days of treatment and there are effective medicines for it, BUT the crux of the problem shall remain, and therefore its recurrence time and again.

You have edema. You need to cut back on your salt intake which means even prepackaged foods and drink nothing but water. Water eliminates water. Also elevate your legs higher than your heart and massage them from the ankle upwards. Trust me I had that problem. I have cut out all salt from my foods, I no longer eat any prepackaged foods and I only drink water. I have had 3 surgeries on my leg from a blown achilles tendon and the swelling would never go down until I eliminated all salt. Also swollen legs especially around the ankle is a sign of heart disease. However if your legs burn and are red get to the doctors immediately that is a sign of cellulitis not related to cellulite. Cellulitis is caused by bacteria that invades the skin and can be deadly.

If you are fairly young, then the salt is probably the problem. Drink plenty of water, sit with your feet elevated, and don't stand in one place for long periods of time. I drink water with lemon and some times tea, to get rid of swelling. If it continues, you need to see a doctor.

first of all you want to be evaluated by a doctor, sometimes leg swelling can signify an illness like heart or thyroid issues, amongst some others, once ruled out you can resort to conservative treatment, otherwise simply you can sit with legs elevated, sleep with a pillow under the legs, wear tight stockings etc. good luck

Gangadharan is right. It could be your kidneys or heart. Please see a doctor. Elevating your legs if it is your heart could cause the extra fluid to become "backed up" making it even harder for your heart to pump your blood in and out of your legs. Also, until you know what's wrong, watch the amount of fluids you are taking in. If it is your heart or kidneys, the excess liquids, or water, will just continue "pooling" in your legs, making your edema worse. Best wishes and feel better.

Check your heart (ECG) and kidney (Microalbuminuria test). In both cases, the intake of sodium has to be reduced. Take urgent action.
