According to 1 Thessalonians 5, the Lord will come like a thief in the night, when they say "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them..."
Ok, I'm no expert. I've only been a Christian for a week or so, but all these people keep pointing to wars and such to say "Aha the end time is near." But according to this verse, it will come when everyone is saying, "There is peace and security." Well, I would think that would not be now!

It doesn't say that there will be actual peace. It's just the perception of the unsuspecting world, who would believe things are fine when they aren't. It probably won't be incredibly obvious, since the Lord is coming like a thief.

The bible does say wars and so forth but the end will come when we THINK theres peace and security. It doesn't say we will have it....just when there SAYING it and they have been saying it for a while. Continue to read the Bible. You are correct. Don't worry about what others say (They don't know the bible at all) :)

The convienently ignored fact by all the "DEATH TO THE WORLD!" folks out there is that there have always been wars, rumors of wars, pestilence, famine, and death. When modern Israel was founded, Christians across the globe held their breath for the big "exit mundi". Guess what: We're still here. We'll still be here for a very long time unless some Rapture fan decides to launch a nuke to get his favorite night fantasy started.

Jesus' disciples asked in Matt 24:3 "...what shall be the sign of thy coming and the end of the world?"
Jesus said that no one knows when He will return except the Father. (Matt 24:35-36)
However, Jesus said that you will know when the end is near when all the following events are taking place:
1) false Christs will appear
2) hear of WARS and RUMORS OF WARS
3) nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom
4) famines
5) pestilences
6) earthquakes in various places
7) Christians worldwide will be hated, persecuted and killed
8) many people will turn from God; they will betray and hate one another
9) false prophets will arise and deceive many
10) sin will be rampant everywhere and people will stop caring for others
11) the gospel of the kingdom of Jesus Christ will be preached around the whole world.
All these signs are partially in operation right now.
We are definitely near the end.
If you want to be ready for the rapture you must repent from your sins, and live for Jesus with all of your heart.

Because people misinterpret the Bible every chance they get.
Most people will read into it what they want to for their own ends.

The wars are the "destruction" you speak of. In that case, God has already come in time of peace and now we are in the destruction part.
But it's all bollox anyway.
