While it will be uncomfortable, it is not too bad. In surgery, the cyst will be opened and the lining of the cyst removed. According to the physician (really surgeon), he may pack the inside with iodoform gauze and allow the tissue to granulate in (heal from the bottom up to the skin surface). Keep the wound area clean and dry. One of the proctologists I studied under, discovered a sign, named Sebrick's sign as a diagnostic tool for pilonidal cysts. He discovered that people prone to have pilonidal cysts have eye brows that join together above the nose. I've never kept records but it seems to be true.

It usually is not too bad, however, without knowing how bad the cyst is, how long she has had it, ect., its hard for me to answer your question!! If the cyst is deep, then you will probably have to pack the open area with a special gauze, called idoform gauze, every day until area heals!! If this is the case, you need to be sure you pack it really good, as this wound has to heal from the inside out!! The Dr. will sometimes tell pts. a lot longer heal time than they actually have, if the packing is done well!! Good luck!!

I had one removed @ 21. I'll be honest and tell you it wasn't fun. They cannot sew you back up and you are sent home with a hole on you butt. She will have to take sitz baths every day and will not be sitting down for about 2 weeks. Pain killers are there for a reason. Encourage her to get up and move as soon as possible. The more she lays around, the worse it will be. Get lots of movies too. After she heals (and she will) she will be sore for awhile, but it does go away. Wish her luck.
