We have a huge loft upstairs that I want to make my room and I want my privacy, someone that came by said he couldn't put a door because it is a fire hazard, is this true? Some attics that are rooms have doors at the bottom, why is this any different? If it is true, how can I go around it to add a door or something for some privacy?

I don't think so, there are stairs at the bottom of attics that are made into rooms, of course that's on TV it may be different in real life, but I don't think so, whats wrong with wanting privacy?

Didn't you ask this before?

Again, I do not see how this could be against any sort of code. Moreover, I think would be dangerous and possibly against code to NOT have a door. If there is any doubt, why not put the door at the top of the stairs?

That seem kinda stupid. My basement is finished and has a door at the top of the stairs, how is that any different.

I'd get the local building inspectors or whoever to give you the right answer.

the fire codes differ from city to city so check with your local housing inspector, where I live you can...legally have a door at the bottom of the stairs...but I think it only applies to homes that have walkout basements.

Oh yes.. it is a fire hazard to do so. If you want to find out alternatives(because I cannot visualize your house) ask the local fire department in your area
