The other day my pickup all of sudden would not idle and then started overheating. I took it to the shop and they said the motor is gone and must be replaced as coolant is leaking into the oil pan; there are metal flakes in the oil pan and timing belt is loose. The only problem is my truck runs and I can drive it so I am not convinced it needs a new motor. What kind of repair do you think I could get done that would allow me to keep the motor? It now idles OK and runs fairly well. thanks.

Most likely your head gasket is blown, or the head is cracked (or both). Depending on the mileage on the vehicle, you may be a able to get buy with a replacement head gasket (and head if needed) or you may have to rebuild the entire engine.

You could replace the engine with a used one, or a rebuilt one, most likely for less than the cost of rebuilding yours!

i own a repair shop,,and i think the block is busted or cracked on it,,that's probably how the water is getting in the oil pan it could just be a head,,but its usually not when its this bad,,you can have it tore down and looked at if you want to,,it might just be the head on it,,but its going to still cost a lot to repair it either way,,and there's a good chance it wont hold up,after its been repaired, and all that money will be gone for good,,id think it over before i did anything ,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.PS a good second choice would be to find a good used engine for it,,that might be cheaper all around.

On some Toyota engines the timing chain tensioner goes bad and the chain will start making a noise as it wears through the engine, then you will get coolant in the oil. I have seen 3 of these.

Something may be blocking the circulation. 1) Remove the thermostat and see if the problem continues. 2) Something is allowing the water pump to drain the radiator but preventing water from reentering the radiator. Make sure that the radiator overflow line is not clogged or crimped. 3) Make SURE you have a 50/50 mix of coolant. If you only have water, the system will always boil over. 4) Make SURE your pressure cap is working properly. If it doesn't pressurize, the system will boil over.

you have a cracked head or a severly blown head gasket, if their is metalflakes in the oil, you need an entire rebuild of the engine, you may be able to drive it for awhile, but it's going to start smoking and eventually lock up.
