I'm a Korean and while staying in Canada a long time ago, I noticed something weird. The drivers seemd to look back to confirm the safety while attempting changing lanes.
All the cars are equipped with side mirrors, and the drivers can see the back through them.
But why? Why do Canadians try turning head back?
It can be very dangerous.
I know Canada is wide and traffic jam is unusual.
So they may have time to take such an action, but it's still werid.
The sidemirrors don't tell a lie. They just reflect just in the way they are reflected. In changing the lanes, momentary decision is required,,,don't you think so?

It's because of the blind spots. Here in the United States drivers are suppose to quickly look to make sure there is not a car in the lane they are wanting to change into because of the problem with blind spots. Unfortunately, not everybody does that and that's when accidents happen. At least, it's when some of them happen.

Its not just Canadians who do it, but people worthy to be called good drivers do this. Its called checking your blind spots, your side-view mirrors have blind spots and you will not be able to see a car if it is in the blind spot, so the best thing is to confirm that there is no car in the blind spot by turning your head.

You just answered the question why Koreans are BAD drivers!! It is much safer to actually look back. It is common sense and you are a bad driver if you don't.
By the way it is not just Canadians. Americans do it as well.

Side mirrors are nice but many often have blind spots. A quick check is not at all unsafe, quite the opposite infact.

I am American, I also do a "head Turn" to check for traffic in my blind spot.

By turning your head, you are checking your blind spot. Mirrors only show a small area around you. It can be very dangerous if you do not check your blind spot.

Were you the one who nearly ran me off the road ??

its a good driving habit, eventhough your car is equiped with rearview mirror and side view mirror, there is always still that dead spot between your back side window and your rear window

Its called a "head check".. Motorcyclists are taught to do it. It confirms that some jackass isn't riding in your blind spot.
