Can someone please explain this concept to me?

I've heard of couples who refer to their significant other as their fiance, but they have no plans to get married? A fiance until recently has always meant that you plan to get married.

If there are no plans to get married, why call the person a fiance?

Yes. I've seen this too, I don't get it either but I think some people just feel the need to add a certain formality to their relationship by giving it a more serious sounding title -- fiance as opposed to girlfriend or boyfriend.

I'm not too sure about this concept either, but to me it seems that they prefer to refer to the significant other as fiance because boyfriend/girlfriend just doesn't seem to describe them anymore, it may be because they live together and do things as a married couple would, only difference is they are not legally married, or maybe because after you reach a certain age, it doesn't sound too mature to say boyfriend/girlfriend. I really don't know what the deal is with this, but this is just my theory.

i think this is just an expression of lust.
people go overboard and call each other fiance just as a silly way to show how much they are in to their mate.
personally, i think its stupid. i agree with u, why call each other fiance if ur not even planning to get married?

its a recent phenomenon,
being a fiance now is akin to marriage,
all the sex, none of the commitment,
i say lets just ban the institution of marriage altogrther

my sister is like that. she is engaged, but she rather lives with her boyfriend and be engaged than get married and be committed. i think its a good way of life too. you know you gonna spend the rest of your life with that person (if u really love him) so there is no need to hurry. either way u gonna merry.

We should invent a new word for it........I dont' get it either, your not engaged unless you want to marry the person and agree to it. They are just trying to justify shaking up and playing house until someone better comes along.

Maybe we should refer to it as.....ringed........pinned........how about leashed?
