In most large metro areas the wait is 4 hours plus. Unless you've been seen by triage and they determine that you are more urgent (bleeding, unconcious, asthma, etc). Many times kids will be seen earlier.

Your question is impossible to answer. I interned at the Naval Hospital (Balboa) in SD and there were times when we had patients stacked...but other times it was quiet. Unless there are mass casualties (this applies to civilian hospitals too), we have to tough it out with the on-duty staff. The real complication is that people use the ER for routine complaints instead of emergencies, and we get complaints of joint pain of 10 days duration, and constipation of several days. This mis-use of the ER causes both delays in treatment (unless there is a life/death situation) as well as escalates medical care costs. Everyone would be both offended as well as litigatious if they were told to visit their own physician as their complaint wasn't an emergency. Don't blame the doctors and nurses...place the blame where it belongs. Many people do this because the ER is convenient to use at night after work. Also blame the stupid people who carelessly get injured when they know you will need the ER for yourself.
