It began when Jesus began his ministry, he said that he would build the church and the disciples would spread it...it took a lot of courage to do this because claiming to be Christian has never been popular in fact it has gotten countless people killed..they rejected Christ they reject his disciples no big secret...but by FAITH one comes to the truth of Christ and by Faith one accepts to follow even if it means death...but we are not radicals who will blow ourselves and everyone around us up for not believing, at least not the true Christians anyway.

It began with Jesus and His life. Read the Bible starting in the book of John - that is the beginning of Christianity. It is not a "religion" like people want to say. It is a relationship with Jesus Christ and God.

phoebe l,
Christianity started with John the Baptist who prepared the way for God to enter the scene in the form of Jesus Christ. John the Baptist was a fulfilment of the voice in the wilderness who was to come and prepare the way.
Then Jesus revealed himself, already a grown man, and began to minister to those who were prophecied about. I think that if you got a Bible and began reading in the Gospel of John, you would get a great picture of what all that was about. But get a good pastor and perhaps some commentaries.
Ask LOTS of questions. You won't understand it all in one night.

I suggest Rodney Stark's The Rise of Christianity, a great book. He shows how the faith grew due to reasons you'd never suspect. He is a sociologist and writes from a Christian perspective. Check the link which describes some of his work in this area.

It is because of the hope of Israel that I (Paul) am bound with this chain." .... From morning till evening he explained and declared to them the kingdom of God and tried to convince them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe. They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your forefathers when he said through Isaiah the prophet: " 'Go to this people and say, "You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving." For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.' "Therefore I want you to know that God's salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!"

It began in greece some 300 bc when Alexander the greats Scribes mistranslated a vers in Isaiah
"Behold, this young maiden with conceive"
was accidently translated to
"Behold, a young virgin will conceive"
And stupid people ran around linking Judaism with greek mythology
