I am sure you do not want a religiously based answer, but you are going to get one. I am taking a bible study class and in it the lecturer warns about the "It is me, and there are no others," type of mentality. We are surrounded by that type of mentality daily. If people are not taught at home and cannot figure it out for themselves, then this is what we are left with.

I do not ride the bus (we don't have a very good bus system in Alaska) but I am very considerate of older people, pregnant woman and disabled people.

I don't ride the bus, but I think it's a case that people just are ignorant about the fact that an elderly person or a pregnant person may need to sit more than the person who is younger.

But also remember this, that not everyone who legitimately needs a handicapped parking spot has a medical condition that's apparent. So it's very possible that a younger person may look healthy but is sick enough that they also need the seat.

I think it is a group psychology issue as much as a "people are inconsiderate" issue. Everyone probably expects someone else to get up. If you are really bothered by it when on the bus or train, do what I do: ask someone to move. If you do it nicely, they will usually feel bad for not moving first and get up without a fuss.

It is because, either their parents failed to teach them manners, common courtesy and consideration for others - or they failed to learn manners, common courtesy and consideration for others, or they are still living in an area where common courtesy is only given to "certain types" of people.

Not enough parents successfully taught their children not to be self-centered or to care about someone other than themselves.

When I was pregnant with my son, I went to K-Mart one day, in Birmingham, Alabama. As I approached the crosswalk, I noticed an elderly black woman was trying to cross but no-one would stop - at the cross walk - and let her cross. When I got up to her, the drivers stopped to let me cross, so I took her arm and helped her to cross, too. The man in the pick-up truck got out, walked up to me, grabbed my arm and cussed me out, then told me if I wanted to live very long, I'd be careful about who I "helped out."

Five minutes later he was finally able to stand back up and I told him, "next time you want to manhandle a pregnant woman you might want to be careful and make sure she doesn't have a second degree black belt and hormonal mood swings !!!!!!

Some people still do. The best thing to do is be an example for the rest that don't.
It's sad, but it isn't just because people don't think to do these things, they might think to do them but are afraid to do so because they don't want to offend someone.

They did not get proper training in being polite and respectful. I'm 65 and still stand for a woman to have my seat, or for any other person who appears to need my seat more than I do.
