I have never understood it.. All of my guy friends and my boyfriend are all turning 21 this year and they are all planning on all taking a week off of work and get smashed every single day of that week. they have been drinking together ever since they were 17 so why is it such a big deal now? just because they can drink legally now? big deal there is nothing special about it to me. A few drinks out in a bar is understandable but what is so important with getting smashed?

when i turn 21 i won;t be able to drink a lot because my body is to sensitive to liquor. It makes me sick to even drink a little of it. maybe that is why its not a big deal to me.

They are men. That is all the explanation they need. I suggest that you go to the spa with your boyfriend's credit cards...he won't need it if he is smashed!

It is definitely a guy thing. Most guys start drinking way before they turn 21, and for some crazy reason they think that because they are going to be "legal" they should live it up to the fullest and get beyond drunk. Doesn't make it right, and it is kind of stupid and immature, but something about their egos say they have to get way past the legal limit on their 21st birthday. It really doesn't get any better until they turn 25 from what I have been told. My boyfriend is turning 24 in a few days and he is talking about getting "smashed" with his friends as well. Women defiantly mature quicker and differently from guys. Don't get me wrong though...I know quite a few girls that think getting trashed when they turn 21 is the thing to do. It really all depends on each guys maturity level. I have a few guy friends that have yet to get trashed, smashed or even tipsy and they are in their mid twenties already. They just want to feel macho would be my number one assumption.

You have the right answer it is a big deal because NOW they are legally able to you can drink at any age if possible but when they see the legal age IS then that is when it is a big deal. I have 2 girls and when turned 21 they did the same thing so it does not matter if you are male or female.

Celebration of legal age for alcohol. Hopefully the thrill will wear off. Sounds like things are a little out of control already. As I've said before, be careful. It's real easy to think your having fun or a good time but your actually creating a lifestyle that may be difficult to change.

Hello, It wasn't for me because 4 years before I turned 21 the voting and drinking ages were lowered from 21 to 18 in my province here in Canada. Cheers, Michael Kelly

Ladies kind of have their coming of age around 16, what's so big about sweet sixteen...it is. Guys really kind of hit their stride at 21...bless em'. Just encourage someone to be the designated driver or load their pockets with cash for taxi's.

The first thing I would say is that a week off of work is a little drastic, I celebrated my 21st on my birthday and that was it.

The second thing I would say is that you seem angry... weren't you invited or don't you drink at all.

Because a 21 year old man is really still a BOY. And they will act like BOYS well into their 30's.

It is a final initiation into manhood. When your 21 you can get as drunk as you want and no one can touch you(as long as your not disorderly). But what they will be doing will be very dangerous. I suggest you and a friend act as designated drivers for those weeks.
