if you get only one, make sure you get him a mirror so he won't get lonely. sounds silly, but it's true. my mother-in-law has 2 cockatiels and the hump like crazy, so just be prepared for babies if you get 2.

I first got a sun conure and he was just find alone. But we are gone all day so we got him a tiel and put them across the hall from each other. Thay team up and yell at times and they eat at the same time and go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time. They are buddies but still like people a lot better then each other. But there is no mating and it is like putting two people together one speaks engilsh only and the other speaks spanish only. They get along but don't get very close.

Works for us.And the conure will talk to us and the tiel is trying to.

One more thing. I got my conure a mirror and he did not care about it at all. So after we got the Tiel I gave the mirror to him and he stood in front of it all the time like he was druged by it. He never left it but to get a quick bite of food and right back to it. Do do not get a cockatiel a mirror. It is not good for them. I have read it if you get them a mirror make sure it is a small one just enough for them to see their face or you will have sombi bird.

If you want the bird as a companion for yourself, get one. If you want them as companions for each other, get two or more. Under NO circumstances should you put a mirror in the cage unless you want the bird to bond with the mirror and ignore you completely. Trust me on this one.

Word of advice on cages: Do not get a tall or round cage. Get a cage that is wider than it is high, as cockatiels are not helicopters, nor do they fly like them. And they like corners to put their heads into when they are afraid. Round cages freak them out.

If you want the bird to attach to you and not to its mate, get only one.
Good luck!
