Greetings!
The "till you die" answers are just wrong.
I am a regional consultant for a large chain, and as of last month, our average length of stay on new admissions was 39.6 days and over 80% of our admissions were discharged back to the community (NOT death).

Nursing facilities have changed dramatically over the last ten years because of changes to Medicare Reimbursement. Now instead of recovering in the hospital, patients are often sent to our facilities for short term rehabilitation.

That being said, there is a huge difference between nursing homes that specialize in long-term care and those that specialize in short term rehab. Those that specialize in long term care will often have an average length of stay of over a year.

I hope this helps.

Lengths of stay in nursing homes vary widely and can be measured in different ways. Many people enter for brief stays; in 1997, 67 percent of people who left nursing homes had stayed for three months or fewer. However, the same data show that, of all those currently living in a nursing home in 1997, only 18 percent had been there fewer than three months
Overall, in 1997, the average length of time since admission among all residents currently living in a nursing home was 2.5 years. This average varied by gender and marital status (see Figure 2)

it just depends on if going to a nursing home is really what the patient wants....if they are sick and going there depresses them, they don't last long, and end up dying there. 3 of my grandparents that went into nursing home didnt last more than 6 months....but then again, they could have just died from being sick.

So i say the average is 6 months.

It really varies. My grandma was in a nursing home for 7 months, and my grandpa was in one for over 2 years.

I'm a nurse in a long-term, sub-acute facility. It depends if they are just there for rehab or if they are elderly and no longer can care for themselves at home. It all depends on the individual situation and what kind of care they will need.

people in nursing homes tend to be old and retired so I think it all depends on their life expectancy

In short...............till you die
