How much do you want to spend? Sewing & embroidery machines usually start around $1000 and can go up to $10,000 depending on what you want.

Brands I'd recommend Viking, Pfaff, Elna & Bernina. Shop a dealer and test drive the machine by bringing in fabric samples at least 4"x4". If they won't let you test it, walk away and find someone who will. Personally, I believe when you buy any of the brands I mention, you are buying a high quality machine. The major difference will usually be a small feature and the quality of service you recieve from the staff. Buy where they treat you right.

Things to consider beforehand:

Do you want it to interface with the computer?
Do you want to design your own embroideries? (Usually extra cost and can be several thousand dollars)
How big of an embroidery do you want? (4x4, 5x7, 6x4, 18x6)? The bigger the hoopsizes you want, the bigger the price.
Do you want to buy design CDs? If you do, you'll need a way to transfer them from the CD to the machine. The easier machines to do this with are also usually more expensive.

I have a Bernina Artist 170 and LOVE IT! I've had it for at least 6 years. It is easy to use. It has a touch screen. I probably use the embroidery portion more because I can just put my item in and leave it while it works. It takes seconds to switch the machine from embroidery to sewing mode and back again. I did purchase the computer software that allows you to download emboridered designs from the internet and comes with about 15 different fonts. But this isn't needed to use the machine. The machine itself comes with 3 different fonts and about 20 different design stitches.

Cheap ones are Brother and Singer.
The Viking mentioned above and Pfaff are great but more expensive.
Pfaff is probably the best in my opinion.

Viking is a good brand, made with metal internal parts instead of plastic.
