Quoting the BIBLE or ANY OTHER RELIGIOUS TEXT is NOT thinking for YOURSELF! Why do people do that? And why do people ask questions that DO NOT pertain to the religion section IN the religion section?

People quote the Bible to let you know why they think the way that they do. Especially if they are talking to another person who believes in the Bible... then it carries a lot of weight. And you are thinking for yourself when you quote the Bible, you chose to believe the Bible as truth didn't you... I would say that that is thinking for yourself. And there is no telling why there are people on here who ask questions in the religion section that do not pertain to religion. No clue.

Me, personally, I love it when people quote the Bible... but only when it is really relevant. I hate it when people mis-quote or mis-use the Bible... it really doesn't look good for other Christians...

Since the Bible is the religious text for Christians, then Christians will quote the Bible. Duh. Are you an idiot? Muslims will quote the Qu'ran, Buddhists will quote from their favorite Buddhist author, etc.

Several reasons to give a quote:

1) I want to prove that my response is not just my own idiosyncratic belief, but is a typical belief of Christians in general;

2) I am trying to follow the teachings of Jesus, not start my own religion;

3) Another author said something more equivalently than I could word it, so why reinvent the wheel?;

4) Why would you or anyone else want my personal "guess" about God's opinions anyway? I am nobody, so what I think about God or religion is just as irrelevant as your own insane rantings about the same. If you want to know what God thinks, then you need to consult someone who has claimed to have spoken with him. Otherwise, we are just assuming random things about God (and you should have learned by now from life itself that it is often pointless to ASSUME things about a person that you have never met.).

As for the second part of your question, I have no clue as to why people ask non-religious questions here.

Not all people "quote the bible for EVERYTHING" in the Religion section.

Remember how Job questions God ... "Why?". His "comforters" tried to find the best answers they could get by thinking. Job did a lot of deep thinking. But did he arrive at the right conclusions? Seeming not. For God said to Job "where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth". God is the only one Who know the answers to all human questions; sometimes He has chosen to provide those answers in his Holy Book.

Why shouldn't we quote the divine answers rather than just tell what our fallible thinking suggests.

>And why do people ask questions that DO NOT pertain
>to the religion section IN the religion section?

That is a good question!

This is the Religious section and the Bible is a religious book. If a person didn't quote the text and where it was from, then people would ask, "where can I find that text, or what verse is it?"

As to why people post questions that do not pertain to the religion section, I'm unsure.

Because the Bible is FACT (some will disagree, as you will see). Why guess when you can quote the Bible, especially when people are asking a certain question and it's in the Bible. If you were asking a question about Law, we would quote the states Revised Code/Ordinance.

*EDIT* Awwww, I was told to "Go bact to school" and to "Get a clue". LMAO! Gotta' love Freedom Of Speech! What church says the Bible is NOT fact? LMAO!

Oh and someone ALREADY wrote a book that people believe in and follow...His name is L.Ron Hubbard and the religion is Scientology! Geesh. That's a WHOLE other subject (and BS).

Man, people really get compassionate on here about religion. We can agree to disagree without being rude.

Usually the best way to make a point is to quote the leading authority on the subject. When the subject is religion, why would you not go to the authority on that?

Would you expect that your child would be able as he/she grew to be able to discover counting, adding, multiplication, fractions, trigonometry, algebra geometry, statistics, and calculus all on their own with no help or guidance from anywhere or anyone? Of course not. It was no one person who discovered all of those. It took hundreds of people over thousands of years to understand it. We get the advantage of starting with knowledge they already recorded for us.

Same with religion. God is so vast and complex that no one individual could possible figure Him out in one lifetime. It took hundreds of people encountering God over thousands of year to get the full understanding. It has been recorded for us in a library of 66 books, each building on the ones before and foreshadowing the ones to come. Over 40 authors of multiple races and cultures on three continents writing over a 1500+ year time period, most having never meet the others. Yet they produce a volume that has an incredible consistency in theme and doctrine. That gives a progressive revelation of who God is and how we can relate to Him. It records the experiences of hundreds of people and their encounters with God. It stands as the definitive authority on the subject of God and religion. It is called the Bible.

So why NOT quote the authority when you want to be sure you are giving the right answer?

People quote the Bible for everything because they are stuck in a kind of paranoid quandry. They think that the universe is rife with conspiracies to deliberately mislead them into damnation. This comes from an underlying lack of faith in God who more often reveals himself as the still small voice. Being so afraid of damnation, they cling in desperation to a text, thinking that if they can follow the rules closely enough (i.e. joining the exclusive club of the "saved" and accepting every Bible-backed imperative included in the contract) they will be safe. Jesus, of course, taught by his example, repeatedly going against the religious conventions of his day, but biblical fundamentalists are blind to this. There is even a quote in the Bible that warns against taking written material too seriously. In Second Corinthians 3:6 it says "The letter kills, but the spirit gives life." Unfortunately the fear addiction of fundamentalists will always gravitate toward the threatening messages and dismiss the liberating ones. (Sorry, I had to quote there--just for the sake of fundies who read this!) I once read an interesting essay that made the case that fundamentalists are actually practicing idolatry by worshipping a book instead the living God. It makes sense to me.

the bible is part of our religion and is our guide,the word of god so it only makes sense to use and apply it to our conversations particularly in a section that mostly pertains to religious questions&answers. when used the person is using the quote as it is part of who they are and how they understand something to be so it is thinking for yourself. people in other sections can quote from for example studies,polls etc... to put their point of view across,they didn't orchestrate or participate in the poll(etc) but it is still their opinion when they use it to make their point and it also makes that point more valid and justified. as for those who ask non relevant questions sometimes it is to annoy people,incite people or sometimes people are ignorant or are simply bored.

The Bible is the basis for our faith and our lives. God's Word is an indelible part of every facet of our lives. From the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep. We look to His Word for guidance as to how to conduct ourselves in every situation. He is the Supreme Being. He knows everything there is to know. He knows how we should treat others. He's the best father around. He can teach us, His children, the most marvelous things. Faith is part and parcel of every aspect of my life. I cannot separate faith from my life. They are one and the same. The Book is full of information that is relevant to today's society, if you'll just take the time to read and study it. God bless you!
