Emperors certainly still exist, but rarely carry much power. Japan's emperor, Akahito, just recovered from prostate cancer. His father is probably more commonly known (Hirihito)

An Emperor is a sole sovereign ruler of a country. I think there aren't many soles left. No pun intended. Sovereigns yes. Japan has an emperor, some princess just produced the first male heir in ages, but as I understand it, there is a government also. Most Kings, Emperors etc., are figureheads nowadays. Seems to be a lot more Presidents, Prime misters, etc., around more than anything else these days. Democracy?

he is the only reigning emperor. The current emperor is His Imperial Majesty the Emperor Akihito, who has been on the Chrysanthemum Throne since his father Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito) died in 1989.
