Hi

Yes yes yes.. Hawks, all kids,..like Eagles will and do Take small dogs, rabbits and puppies....

You are not going to be able to do much about the hawk... they are protected and you can not legally kill them.

Im wondering if you have a puppy that will grow or remain small....

If it is going to be a medium sized dog or larger the Hawk will leave it be once its big enough ... but a small breed is still at risk..

I would suggest a covered kennel run for your dog until then... or you stay out with it while it is out...
If the hawk swoops even with you there... raise you arms and wave make yourself big and loud...

They are gutsy but not stupid... he will leave....

I have heard scarecrows... ultrasonics, fake owls you name it... ideas to get rid of hawks.... but never heard anything that worked.

It is possible if you live near a field that the hawk is mousing not going after your dog.. but you are the best judge of this... if you think he is looking at your dog for dinner I would take no chances...
Keep him on a line, leash so hawk cant leave with him,, kennel him with a lid or stay within 2-3 feet of him at all times when outside...

Keep an eye to the sky.. they are quiet and quick..
And know
It's not personal... the Hawk is just doing what he does..hunts

He will either move on or lose interest in your pup sooner or later...

Good Luck....

First off a hawk can get your puppy if the puppy is small enough. They can carry a good bit of weight. If they can carry a rabbit they can carry a puppy. It is rare for a hawk to go after something that is around people as they prefer to stay away from people. The only reason it is after your puppy is that it's normal food source has disappeared. (IE Mice, rabbits) and it is hungry enough to risk trying to get your puppy. They have a thing you know they like to eat too. :)

I am not sure what you can do unless when your puppy goes out you go with it until the puppy is big enough the hawk will not go after it.

I respect the first answer because I don't know a lot about hawks, but I'd still be concerned that the hawk might TRY to capture your pup and cause lacerations. But hawks do hunt for small mammals so your pup certainly needs your protection. It would be a horrible thing to find out we're wrong about what a hawk can capture.

I wonder if having a garden hose in hand and spraying at the hawk would keep it away? Timing will be important but as long as you get it wet and it can't avoid the spray, I should think you'd be able to condition it to stay away.

Mega-good luck wishes on this one!

I don't know anything you can do to keep hawks away, but you are right to be worried. They are a protected species.

There are a lot of hawks in my area and I've seen them carry away animals as small as squirrels to as large as a neighbor's mature cat! And...they do not always carry their prey away to kill and eat it. They can and will attack and kill their prey on the ground and tear it a part with their tallons on the spot! I saw a red-tail hawk attack and kill a grown goose at a near-by pond and not even leave the ground.

You just need to be vigilant when you have your puppy outside. Keep it on a lead at all times. I have a 4 pound pom, a 6 pound pom and a 10 pound Rat Terrier and I never let them out without me or someone to keep a watchful eye on them. (Day or night...because we also have owls here)

You didn't say what kind of puppy or how big he will be at maturity.Maybe you can build an enclosure with a top on it if he will grown to a large enough size to defend himself.

Hawks are quite strong and know their limitations as to what they can carry off. Do not let that pup out unless you are within reach or have her on a leash. You cannot legally do anything because all raptors (hawks, eagles, falcons, etc.) are legally protected and can't be interfered with by the average person no matter what trouble they are causing. You could try to find out if there are any people in your area who are licensed falconers that would be willing to legally capture it (if it is a species that can be used for falconry). Call your state's fish & game department and ask if they can advise you. Most states have a similar web address for their home page www.state.ny.us would be for New York, www.state.oh.us would be for Ohio and so on. The state home pages have links to the fish & game departments.

That's pretty serious if you have a small puppy. I suggest keeping it inside until it's big enough to not be hawked.

got a lot of hawks around here to never ever seen a hawk go for a insect that is absurd! smallest prey i ever seen them get was a snake or mouse unless it was a kestrel which is the smallest hawk that preys on small birds and mice, that was good advice to keep him in your presence till he gets a little bigger because they do not like people like the other answerer had said. they get cats around here all the time (in farm country) so keep an eye on the little girl.(dont know of any deterrent except for man)

Your dog is probably too heavy for a hawk to seize. Sometimes, young hawks will "buzz" your pet, but will be scared away by their bark. Normal, healthy hawks will eat only what they know as prey: insects, rodents, and other small birds. Not dogs!
