Good question! Even I had to read the answers. I know they have a wirness protection program where you virtually lose your identity and can't even live close to friends, or loved ones.

Sounds pretty confidential to me

no, they are normally only known by the officers they deal with directly or a small group of officers.

At times even thier supervisors in the dept will not know who they are.
