Gummint should mind their own bidness.

If a parent needs to give a naughty kid's bottom a smack or even a lickin', it should be their right.

NO parents' do not have the right to smack their kids around much less the right to decide to do so. Smacking around is what bullies do to our kids in school. Smacking around is what the gangs call it when they beat someone almost to death. You do have the RIGHT and the RESPONSIBILTY to never, ever allow ANYONE to smack your kid around.
You also have the responsibility to choose appropriate discipline for your kids, and if that includes corporal punishment then you had better be absolutely positive that it IS appropriate. A gentle slap on the hand to prevent a 2 year old from touching something hot comes to mind along with an explaination of why what they were stopped from doing is wrong.

You are a perfect example of, "the dumbing down of America".

I can't even answer this question because I can't even get through reading it without wanting to grab a red pen!

Here's a question for you . . . A Police Officer's job is to serve and protect. They are our authority, just as a parent is the child's. Does that mean that a Police Officer has the RIGHT to smack you around a little if you back-talk or get into a fight or something else they find inappropriate?

Smacking a kid around is different than spanking.
Smacking a kid around in anger is child abuse.
Spanking a child as part of a complete disciplinary approach is a lot different.
I think ...spare the rod and spoil the child.

Spanking, maybe. Smacking your kids around? Absolutely not! The idea is discipline, not a vent for your anger. Never use corporal punishment in anger.

Do I not get this joke?

Yes, if they are being out of control, then yes. Social services is trying to help kids who are being beaten and tortured and malnourished by their parents. They are only looking after the child.

no...kids need love and understanding. We never slapped/smacked/spanked our kids, and they turned out just great...confident, self-assured, well behaved, and excellent self-esteem. We compare them with other kids who were smacked around, and they are better behaved, and make good choices. Don't hurt your kids. You will never know how it will effect them as adults. Jeffrey Dahmer comes to mind.

Hell, everyone needs a little smacking around sometimes...not abuse...but good grief...can't even hardly raise our kids on our own without someone being all up in our business sometimes...
