File a 1040X for 2005, re-submit that paperwork to the IRS, and then submit the W2's and 1040X form to show you only made $12,500.

You can file an amended return (form 1040X) to correct a mistake if there was one. However you must have gotten that $14,500 figure from someplace. If the IRS has W-2s equaling that amount filing an amendment will create yet another problem for you. So you should confirm what the IRS has reported as income on W-2s or other means such as form1099s. To do that you will need a transcript that shows what has been reported to the IRS as your income in the year of concern. You can obtain a transcript by calling (800)–829–1040 or by completing and mailing Form 4506-T (PDF), Request for Transcript of Tax Return, to the address listed in the instructions . Transcripts will be mailed directly to you, and should be received within two weeks after the IRS gets your request. The following is a web site where you can get the form.

You should check with the IRS before you amend to make sure that they only have $12,500 on record (from employers, etc.) for you. If you call & explain they will send you a print out of what they have on file for you. Filing an amended return (1040X) would be a mistake if you really made $14,500.

If you have another W2 that you can't find there is nothing that you can change.

If there were only supposed to be two and you overstated your income you can file an amended tax return for tax year 2005. On that put your corrected income.
