If you're going with the dual boot system (that's what I use), I'd strongly recommend you pick up a copy of a program called System Commander. It includes a program called Partition Magic, and the two of them together make life a WHOLE lot easier than using the default Windows tools.

There are several ways to have Windows and Linux run together at the same time. But let me say first that duel boot scenario is NOT one of them. Duel boot is an either one or other situation. I'm using Linux at this moment, but can reboot into WinXP. But I can't use both at the same time without some additional software.
What you need is VMware, Xen, or similar, They provide a virtual environment where more than one OS can run at the same time.
If you just want to run Linux, plus a few Windows programs, check out WINE. WINE and other WINE-like programs let you run some Windows programs while simultaneously using Linux.

Two hard drives are the best way with a dual boot menu. You can partition your single drive, but it is so much better with two drives
