English is the language of the United States. The vast majority of business is conducted in English, all but a few items that the government publishes are in English. What would be the point of making a law which states English is the official language of the United States except to state that it's the official language? It makes no sense to me to waste time voting on a law which will have no positive impact.
Even if English is the "official" language, that doesn't mean that private businesses can't or won't still offer services and communications in languages other than English so you'll still have to spend all of 1 millisecond choosing to press 1 for English.
How about putting your energies into voting for a law which will provide more English language classes for immigrants? How about voting in a law which puts more resources into training native English speakers as teachers for immigrant children so that they are being taught good English. As it stands now many ESL/bilingual teachers that we hire are immigrants themselves and sometimes don't model good English for their students.
How about putting your energies into something that would make a meaningful impact?

English is the official language, but so many illegals and other foreigners have no respect for this country - so they refuse to learn the history of our land and the language. If they refuse to speak fluent english, they should be kicked out. Period. They can't just come here assuming they can treat our wonderful country like their own. Have some respect.
When in Rome, do as the Romans..
When in The USA - SPEAK ENGLISH!!!
English has been taught to us for hundreds of years - My forefathers were white people who spoke english - and they founded this country! It's only RIGHT that we speak English. This is not Africamerica, Mexicali, Amexico.
When you move to America, you give up whatever citizenship you had in your previous homeland. You're either all for America 110% or you are the enemy.

To the clueless, there's an idiomatic expression that goes like this "there is no such animal, there ain't no such animal".... it's not referring to anyone being an animal or calling anyone an animal. It's an English expression.
It means, there ain't no such thing.
Yes, English should be the official language. Maybe then we wouldn't see voting ballots in foreign languages or have to see signs in government buildings in a foreign language.
There's nothing wrong with knowing many different languages but in the U.S. everyone should know English... EVERYONE.

Absolutely! English should be the recognized official language of the United States of America. However, as this country is a melting-pot of different cultures, nationalities, languages, etc. we should do our best to be as understanding as possible with foreign nationals that reside and travel in our great country and not discriminate against people that don't have a solid grasp of our language.

I would go for English as the official language, but I can also see a case for English and Spanish. Lots of countries officially recognize multiple languages. For example:
Canada(2): English and French,
Belgium(3): French, Dutch ("Flemish") and German,
Switzerland(4): German, French, Italian and Romansh,
India(23): I can't name them all but they include English. Hindi is the official language language for some purposes and (I think (?)) that English is for legal documents. Then lots of regional languages (22 of them) including Bengali, Kashmiri, Kannada and Tamil. See the link I put under Sources for the story on Indian languages.

u.s. has no respectable language on the federal element, yet English is the de facto nationwide language. this signifies that English is the most spoken and common language in the U. S., yet there is not any respectable language. I keep in mind listening to about a regulation they were attempting to bypass making English the respectable language, yet i guess it failed.

No.
And Native Americans are not "Asian". They've been here for 30,000 years. To avoid being a hypocrite, you would have to call everybody AFRICAN because after all that's where we all came from originally.
But seriously — back on topic — you don't want to be forced to not own a firearm. You don't want to be forced into military service. You don't want to be forced to go into a certain line of work, wear a certain kind of clothing, practice a certain religion, etc. And as an American, you are afforded your own choice of all these things. So why the hell do you suddenly want to force people to speak a certain language?

Typical Republican attitude! Anybody who disagrees with you "wants to destroy the country"! You are disgusting and you will be absolutely clobbered in 2008!
nursesr4evr:
Very well said! If English is to be the official language of the country, it should be to bring people together, not divide them! :)

English is - and should officially be - the language of the United States. That alone would save us millions of dollars, wouldn't it?
BTW: There ARE Native Americans. Each tribe had their own language, and it sounds NOTHING like any Asian language. Smoking the crack again? Did you read your Native American "fact" somewhere credible? Or was it from a site that is just full of "accurate" facts?

Anglophones like me should say yes. Look at Canada which is bilingual French and English to see that anglophones in Canada are so hopeless at becoming bilingual that inevitably they lose out on government and other bilingual job opportunities.
I know it takes an average immigrant to Quebec 5 years to learn French. If Spanish is just as hard to learn, American anglophones probably will not have enough time or the right environment to learn Spanish. Besides, bilingualism costs big $$$, and could lead to secessionist movements like Quebec's due to non-assimilation.
