I have read on www.zdnet.com that Windows Vista may cost around $200.00. I doubt if your new computer will prompt you for an update of your Windows XP Prof.
Free updates are usually related to very small components of a software program. When the version is 100% new, you will have to always purchase the new version.
Windows Vista is a complete new version of any past Microsoft platform.
Use your search engine to shop around for the best price of the new Windows Vista, as I am sure you can find all sorts of prices before the actual product comes out to the general public to purchase.
One think I know for sure is that Microsoft as had one set back after another due to bugs in the Windows Vista that has caused delays upon delays in releasing a real date for release to the general public

Not sure of the cost but I strongly suggest you wait until it has been out a while before purchasing it. Just to give them time to get the bugs out. I have found with mircosoft that it is better to buy a computer with the verison of windows you want rather than upgrading. Sometimes you get lots of problems by upgrading.

There are about 5 or 6 versions to choose from ranging from $300-$500 i think.

I don't know if microsoft has set a price on windows vista....I'm not gonna get them until all bugs are worked out of them..
