i received a gift certificate at a fancy salon

during my "consultation" the lady said i need to dye & cut w/ her first, then go to the eyebrow lady to be "cleaned up"

1. when do i tip and is 20% expected, regardless of price? for example i think it will cost 200 or 300$, so i should tip around $50?

2. do i tip the eyebrow lady separately & right after she does it?
(and if her thing costs $50/ out of the 300, do I only tip her $10?)

3. is there a nicer way to tip than handing dollar bills, can you use an envelope or something???

thank you! i'm trying to avoid any faux pas :)

why don't you give the money to charity instead?

I too frequently treat myself, but I agree with the person who said give what you can afford. The 10-20% is just a guideline. By the way, a friend of mine who is a salon owner told me that it is not appropriate to tip the owner, only the other people in the spa. Tricky, because if you've never been there, how would you know? I generally will give the eyebrow lady a five, and my hairdresser 15%, as long as it's not the owner.

I frequently treat myself to spa visits. In my experience, no money changes hands between the customer and the individual service providers.

When you are finished and are at the front desk, settling up your bill, there will be envelopes available for you to address to each of the people who performed personal services for you. Each person should receive 20% of the cost of the service..

The person at the desk will ensure that each envelope is distributed to the proper person.

Hope you enjoy your treat at the salon!

i would hand it directly to her/him upon completion of that particular service.

fold in four and in cash. if you are uncomfortable with what you are giving due to peer pressure. after folding. present it with the dollar amount down.

you give what YOU can afford. not what society says is expected. many can not affored what is expected. 10 or 20% is just a guideline. it is not written in gold. don't try to keep up with the Jones', otherwise you will burn not only your pocket, but yourself in life as well. while you make other people richer. don't worry, there are many other people who give more than 20%. so the less difference of what you may give, would be made up for.

to my knowledge, beauty shops do not split equally at the end of the shift. what is given to any one individual, is their's.

at the end of your session, just add the tip, 10-20% depending on service to the total. they will divy up the tips at the end of the night among the staff.
