I think it's a gift...cause there are many unfortunate people with talent bigger than the world...than it's Paris Hilton people that got the money to take musical classes and they just don't "have it",but practice is always an improving method.

A good sense of pitch is very much an inherited trait, but one can train to get a better pitch "memory." Most people, though, will never be able to learn to be consistently accurate with pitch. Other things like rhythm and steady pulse are mostly acquired skills, and need to be learned. The ability to understand how everything fits together to really be music is also a thing that is hard to teach, and mostly inherited. Anyone can learn to play an instrument, but very few can get to a level where it is pleasant to hear them play/sing.

I couldn't tell you that for certain. But I "can" tell you, I came from a family who sings, and my Dad's family sang. Also, when I was pregnant with my daughter, I sang
to her every day. She sang from the time she could talk, and won a singing contest in the 8th grade, 10th grade, and again in her senior year of high school. So maybe it "is" genetic. Either way, singing is good for the soul, even if the person can't carry a tune. Hope I answered your question. Have a nice day.

It is a combination of both

When talent is mixed with practice and knowledge … bingo… this is the best formula

I taught myself how to play the celo, violin and viola. lot of it is simply practice, and learning, but also I have a very strong mechanical aptitude in my favor.
