No it is not weird. Your bird probably hasn't been handled too much. He/she is learning to trust you [or your hand] by getting on your finger. When it was a baby it wasn't handled or petted so it don't like to be petted on the head.

I had 2 small birds that would get on my finger & they would climb up my arm & get on my shoulder. And I would walk around or from room to room with them on my shoulder. They never tried to fly. They would go from shoulder to shoulder. And they have never been petted on the head but they like to take a ride on my shoulder. And sometimes I would put them on the floor & let them walk around. And I would sprinkle a few seeds on the floor & they would walk around looking for the seeds.

If you have bonded to your bird or if you love your bird & it loves you that is all that matters. They know if you love them. The cockatiel I had would call out & walk from one room to another looking for me & when he got on my shoulder he was satisfied.

try to use only one finger to pet them and begin from the back or the sides of the bird.

You have half the battle won-the bird has begun to trust you.
Try gently curling your finger (one)..over its head (behind its neck). Make the motion gently every day until you can use the finger and scratch the feathers back and forth..
My bird likes that. Be patient, slow, and repeat daily. Good luck.

I dont think its weird. Can you pet them if they are not on your finger? Well when you pet such a small bird you toss it's equalibrium off some and that makes a bird very nervous.

they probably won't let you pet them while they are not on your finger either. most small birds don't like to be pet on the head. they are happy sitting on you and talking with you and hearing your voice.

Not at all. Birds are all individuals. Some birds like being petted and others do not. Many people expect their birds to be like dogs and cats and enjoy being petted. But birds are not dogs or cats. We should allow them their preferences.

Do they let you pet them when sitting on a perch? Birds often don't like ot be touched in certain spots, or they may just be feeling playful.

no its not strange at all.... they are out of their comfort zone... be patient.... go slowly.... start at the feet and touch softly.... do that for a very very long time... then slowly work your way to petting other parts of them... it will take alot of time.. another thing you can do is distract them with their favorite treat, like millet or apple slices.... as you hold that in the hand that tey are perched on try slowly petting them then.... good luck...

will they let you kiss them, lift them up so your sweet lips are in line with the beak and talk ever so sweetly to them.once they are watching you and turning heads to hear you better give them a little kiss and gently rub your face on the body feathers, they will love it.
remember slow and gentle to win there trust and then you will have wonderful friends.
take care and enjoy.
