I think the difference lies between arguing and discussion. I can disagree with someone, but still respect their opinion. If I'm ignoring their opinion, and shouting my own then I haven't given their opinion any credit and am being disrespectful.

example: Is there a God?

One person can say, "OF COURSE NOT! How could you believe such crap!?!" Or they could say, "I don't think so, what makes you think that there is?"

One person could say, "OF COURSE THERE IS! Only Satan causes disbeleif and you fell for it!!!" Or you could say, "I believe there is. What makes you think otherwise?"

In one scenario the person is being closeminded and ignorant. In the other they are expressing their disagreement.

I think respecting the opinion of another is to hear them out and not judge or ridicule them for that opinion.
Of course I could be wrong. Live and let live.

Well, in debate, you can argue and still respect, but typically in real life, you cannot argue without lacking respect. Although, you CAN lack respect without arguing. It's simply called keeping one's mouth shut.

Why? People have all sorts of stupid opinions. And if they're stupid, why give them respect they don't merit?

It is the: you are wrong and I am right and you are even more wrong for not agreeing with me that you are wrong and I am right.
