I just had an amniocentesis done a few weeks ago, and the result has come back indicating the gender of the baby. I am just wondering if it's 100% error-free. Any chance it might have been wrong?

An amniocentesis can be 100% accurate about the child's genetic sex: either XX (girl)or XY(boy), assuming there was no kind of mix-up of the specimen in the lab.

However, there are conditions that can cause an XY child to have the genitalia (labia and a vagina) of a female, or even an XX child to have genitals that look like a male penis and scrotum. There are also conditions that cause a new infant to look ambiguous in gender -- where it is difficult to tell, just by looking, whether it is a boy or a girl.

These situations are very rare, but they do happen. For example, a genetically XY child is born a female in one of 20,000 live births due to androgen insensitivity syndrome.

So, the amniocentesis is very reliable if you need to know your child's actual genotype -- what's in the DNA. But it's less reliable if you need to know what your child's actual gender -- girl or boy -- will be.

No. There is no 100% way of determing the gender of a baby. Your best bet, is a simple ultrasound and those "momma" feelings. I knew mine was a boy when I first got preggers.

They are 99.99% accurate. They test for chromosomes, an XX is a girl, and a XY is a boy.

yep it's the only way (short of birth!) that is 100% for sure. ultrasounds usually can show, but they have been known to be wrong! congratulations!
