It is not a stupid question. You are showing your curiosity in the area of Sociology. Curiosity can be a good thing, though somebody told me it killed a cat.
Re categorizing... Humans are both very intelligent and lazy. It would be possible to analyze every person we meet and by asking pertinent questions, get a good idea of what kind of person they were, their hopes and dreams, talents and skills. But... forget it.
Look at who they hang with, their clothing, and hair styles and manner of speech and let that be our guide! Hey, if they want to be labeled a 'Wannabe' or a 'skater' or a 'punk' then let them show that way and we will call them that whether they are really that or not. It makes life easier and lets us get on with our life.
;-D First impressions are hard to erase. Think about who you really are before getting dressed for the day.
