if you were given the choice of sentence over someone who had offended against you personally-say burglary for instance-which would you choose?? the offender was fined £1000 of which you get half ..or..the offender received twelve months imprisonment and you get nothing. this is working on the assumption that any goods taken were insured and paid up.

Prison. There needs to be consequences for poor choices. Suffering through the consequences of one's actions is often just the right thing to get a person to turn around and fly straight. Tough consequences are often the kick in the pants a person needs. And if he doesn't fly straight, then 12 months off the streets will keep him from burglarizing others during that time. The second time around, he might get 20.

PLUS! If he was burglarizing, then apparently he NEEDED the money (or to sell whatever he stole). So, if he had to pay a fine, likely, he'd steal for that, too. No way would I want any part of that!

Definitely prison time for him. (Or her).

I would probably have to go with the fine. Not because I need the money (naturally, of course I do!), but because taking the fine would avoid the added governmental expenses of keeping the offender in jail.

I'd rather that the government get half of the fine, than have to pay to feed and house another criminal.

Twelve months imprisonment is kinda harsh. But a lighter jail term would be better...because I already got paid once and jail time would teach someone more than simply paying for it.

Lock um up. If they already stole from you- they would probably not have the money to pay the fine (unless they stole if from someone else) I would make the offender pay for their 12 month stay at the jail

Well if one was able to do that he could just keep up the criminal acts, after all there won't be severe consequences.
