Yes, something needs to be done. First, don't back away from the conversation, as scary as it sounds. "You want to kill yourself?" you repeat and pause for the child to continue. Try to get him/her to talk as much as possible.

Find out what exactly the child means - does he/she want to be dead, through with a problem? Does the child feel unloved? Does the child have a plan - that is, some idea of how they would do it?

Be wary of anti-depressants - they're very dangerous for little kids. Be wary of therapists, some are very stupid and dangerous.

Does depression run in your family? Has the 8 year old been through a trauma or death of a loved one? Many children say they want to die because of the stupid lies about heaven - they think by dying they can go join the dead loved one - it's what they've been told, essentially, after all.

You must stay alert, aware, and constantly supervising until you get an understanding of what's happening. If this child is in a great deal of emotional pain, the issues must be dealt with. If the child has a naturally cycling mood disorder, you want to talk about this, about self-care - recognizing mood swings, getting exercise, good nutritution - get rid of the sugar and artificial flavors (check out feingold diet), sunshine, doing positive self-talk.

I think that there is something seriously wrong with the child. You need to sit him/her down and talk to him. I know alot of times children go through a tramatic event that makes them sad and depressed. A big one is child abuse. I know it's horrible to think that someone might have done something to him but it's very possible. I remember feeling that when I was a little girl. I was sexually abused and I remember wanting to die and saying that I wanted to kill myself all the time. I also have a little cousin who when he was 5 years old his family was struggling for food and clothes and electricity! They were really poor and starving. Well one time their mom left them home alone and he said and I quote, "I wish I could die already". I asked him why he said that and why he felt that way and he said, "Well if I die I'll meet Jesus and I won't be hungry and I won't suffer anymore." So you really need to sit down and talk to your child and look for any signs that might point you in the direction of something happeing with your child.

I really hope you are not talking about your child because if so you should not have children. ANYONE who says they want to kill themselves needs help. It does not matter the age, race, height, weight or situation. you should never feel that way and if you do you need help, or in this case if someone you know feels this way you should try everything in your power to help them. Please help this poor child!!!!!!!!! You might think this is just for attention but who really knows what is going on? Never underestimate the power of a depressed person! You never know what they are truly capable of! Hurry befor its to late!

Yes I do. The child needs to be taken to a counselor. They may need medication or hospitalization. At the least they need some counseling.

YES!!!! you need to get that kid to a doctor now. to find out if there are other issues going on. if that doesn't help, bring in a therapist to get to the bottom of the problem.
