Measuring tape, length multiplied by width = sq. ft,
The usual advertised sq. footage of any building is obviously not actual, when you take into account that each wall is approx. 5 inches thick,,,etc. AND if a garage is attached.
IE: a 1200 sq. ft. house, may only have 800 sq. ft of actual living space. Or in your case an 800 sq. ft. Apt. may only have 750 sq. ft. of actual LIVING space if you consider the wall thickness and closets, etc.

I work in the apartment rental industry and the standard is length times width. This usually includes going into closets and measuring from that wall to get the largest figure.

Measure each room's length and width and multiply them together. 10 feet long times 15 feet wide equals 150 square feet. Do this for each room/area.

Measure diagonally across the room. Then measure one side of the room. Take the tan of the angle created and multiply that by the length of the diagonal. Take that number and multiply it by the length of the wall you measured. Divide by two. Now you have the are of the triangle. Multiply THAT number by two and you'll have the area of then entire floor....that simple.
