Look inside his ear, is there a black substance there? If so it's probably ear mites which will require medication from a veterinarian. Ear mites are contagious to other pets, but can be treated very simply. Without proper treatment the condition will only worsen and could cause a hematoma from the dog scratching or shaking it's head, which will only cost you more in the long run at the vet's.

Your dog's ear is probably red from him scratching it. If it doesn't seem painful, it may be that your dog has a yeast infection in the canal. Look and see what it looks like in there. If there's a dark brown wax that has a sharp odor, like yeast, then your dog needs to be looked after. Whether you see this wax or not, I'd take it to the vet for a good looking over.
One of my dogs had a yeast infection and she kept scratching at her ear until she caused a blood vessel to rupture and her ear puffed up into a blood blister. It had to be lanced to allow the blood to escape and I had to apply pressure every so many hours to keep the blood from accumulating again. It turned out that my dog was allergic to the stitches and it became a bigger mess.
And so, in view of all that happened with my dog, please don't hesitate, take your dog to the vet before your dog's situation gets worse.

If there's a lot of black substance in the ears it may be mites. If the ear smells foul or yeasty then it's probably an infection. Or, it could be allergies. It's best to get the vet to take a look at it and see what it is for sure.

To prevent ear troubles you should clean your dog's ears with special dog ear cleaning solution and cotton balls. The bottle of ear cleaner will explain how to do it.

To tell you about hemotomas . They are terrible , and painful. My dog Tigger had a hemotoma that took up half the size of her ear. The only way to get rid of this hemotoma was through a 800.00 surgery . It never came back. Have your dogs ears looked at . It's better to be safe then sorry.

if it is just scratching it's ear fleas are pretty well eliminated since they won't concentrate on just the ear.sounds like ear mites.you can get over the counter meds. for it but they normally don't work well.treat him as if he were your child, when he is sick, take him to the doctor.for all the love and companionship he does and without fail, will continue to give you this is a small price to pay.don't you agree
