Hi'
Don't rent a phone, buy a prepaid Telecom or Vodafone mobile phone for around $100.00 NZ dollars. Then it's yours to keep and get yourself a cheap prepaid plan. Written below is copy from the Telecom site that shows you a good plan that could suit you.

(Call Plans
Talk more and pay less on our Go Prepaid Mates' Rates plan - you never have to worry what time it is - you pay just 49c per minute for calls to any Telecom mobile or landline or anyone in Australia, the UK, USA, Canada or Ireland.)

Remember that's 49c per minute in NZ dollars so it works out even cheaper for you.

Here is there site

These are some more sites to look at that could help you decide what to do.

Giddymate gave some good advice, but there is more you need to know, New Zealand opperates on a different network frequency than the United States. This shouldn't be a problem since most US phones are compatible anyway. Most, but not all.

Also network coverage in NZ is way different than in the US, most of NZ is pretty rural (and mountainous) and you may only get signal in cities.

Have fun, best wishes.

You can get a pre-paid plan with providers when you get there but it would probably be quite expensive for you to call home on a mobile .... probably better to get an international phone calling card from newsagents when you are there and use either a local phone or the phone box....

the advantage though of getting a pre paid mobile phone card is that your family can call you but this would still be expensive for them...

It is easier to take your cell phone from home if you were with a decent company who doesn't surcharge you to death like Cingular, switch ! Save 35.00 a month.

my understanding is that you can rent a cell phone here for use over there. Good Luck. I would check with Verizon.
