In 1655 Gov. Theophilus Eaton in conjunction with the Rev. John Cotton came up with a set of dictates for governing New Haven Colony. These dictates became known as the original version of Connecticut's Blue Laws.

One of the mandates states:

No gospel Minister shall join people in marriage; the magistrates only shall join in marriage, as they may do it with less scandal to Christ's Church.

What are your thoughts on a group of people who were thought to be fairly religious handing over the duties of joining two people in marriage to judges and justices of the peace?

The rate of divorce has not been abated as a result of increased involvement by religious clerics in martial unions; nor have more divorces occurred as a result of judicial officials performing marriages. In reality, the success of a marriage, and its longevity is contingent on the maturity and compatibility of the couple - not on how secular or religious their wedding ceremony was. Too much emphasis in this society is placed on the wedding day, and not on the characteristics and traits that need to be instilled in those who intended to be married so that such a marriage can last.

I n all times , People have placed their own interpretation on scripture. Even when Jesus walked the earth, the priests did not allow anyone but themselves interpret scripture or talk to god in the tabernacle.
As Jesus was crucified the veil of the temple, where the priests used to worship and talk to God was rent from the top to the bottom, therefore everyone could approach God.
Yet some men throughout have chose to use their own interpretation for their own means, and a type of power over others.
Most well read people know that the Bible itself talks of those who will mislead others, this sounds like one of those times to me.

I think that it is just a way not to put God in the marriage. When the judges and justices do it they don't have to say anything about what God has joined together let no man put asunder. They were wrong in pushing it off.

Marriage is between one man and one woman.

The minister, priest, and guests are witnesses to the vows promised before God. The priests blesses the union, and Christ provides the Grace through His choosen elders of the community.

Thats why there are so many divorces now days. You don't have to be in love or commited with the person to get married. The judges and the justices of the peace don't care as long as you have the money to pay for it. SAD!!!!

They have the full right to do so.

Obsolete, irrelevant, evil.

Those piligrams should have had Plymouth Rock land on THEM.

People should get what they want. Why only one spouse? Maybe switch every month, see how it goes, rate each other, then be assigned somebody even more like what you want and need. Anyway it would get people more of the type of spouse they want or think they do then who they get stuck with.
