My grandmothers recipe...
boil 6 good sized yams (or sweet potatoes) in a good amount of salted water.
Once they are tender, allow to cool. Peel and slice (my family always cuts them lengthwise in four or six pieces).
Place, spread out as flat as possible, in an oven dish...
Meantime put a half cup of butter and1 cup of brown sugar in a sauce pan, bring to a boil, and simmer until it starts to thicken.
Pour over the yams, dot with a few pieces of butter, place in the oven for about 40 minutes, or until the sugar syrup has caramelized..

for a quick recipe: I buy the frozen patties, thaw to room temp, spread each one with butter, sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Pop in the oven until the sugar is bubbley and the bottoms are brown. Yum! Yum! Its a favorite around our house.
