Very few spices can replace the smokey cumin flavor. It really depends which blend of curry spice you are trying to make. One example of a curry spice blend contains: Coriander, Turmeric, Fenugreek, Cinnamon, Cumin, Cardamom, Ginger, Black Pepper, Cloves, Cayenne, Allspice and Mustard. In this example, you could find replacements for the fenugreek and perhaps the cayenne, but the rest of the spices are rather distinctive ad would be hard to substitute.
What other spices does your recipe call for?

Maybe chili powder, but I agree, just use less. I do if I think it calls for too much. A little bit of cumin goes a long way.

I suppose you could try tumeric with some white or black pepper.
I would say saffron, but that's expensive. Hmmmm... I wonder what THAT would taste like?
And paprika. Try substituting paprika some time.
Of course then these aren't traditional curries, I guess.

Cumin is a pretty distinct flavor, not sure you could really substitute it with anything.
