Where are you going, and from where? If it US to Mexico or Canada, I don't think you need a passport until January 2007 and you caould also check if the passport has to be current for those areas. You can get a passport renewed as quickly as overnight but it will cost you to do so, around $140 + the usual passport renewal fee (like $120).

Well, you obviously are up the creek without a paddle. Kind of ignorant to let it go so long before checking, huh? All is not lost, you can get an expedited passport for the renewal fee of $67 PLUS the expedite fee of about $125. Don't worry about the money since you will probably have Mommy and Daddy pay it for you.

I'd fill out application form, take passport photos, and submit them to the passport office, pay more money to process it faster. And see if a trip can be postponed to a little later, in that case. And bring in the old passport, too.

You can look on line and maybe get it renewed faster. Also, if you're going to Mexico you can use your birth certificate and a photo i.d. Check online for Mexican visa requirements, or if it is another country you can do the same. search passport on the web and there are government sites that will answer your questions

You are not the only person for whom this problem has surfaced.

No, usually this should have been checked by the airline before boarding you...If your passport is not valid it is up to the airline to return you to your country of origin on the first flight at their expense...plus they are heavily fined.
