When you do get him checked out, go to a couple of drs. just to get a couple of opinions. ADD is serious bc years could be wasted if he doesnt get the proper attnetion and care. Also, different meds work diff on everybody. So if one doesnt work then maybe another will. I know that from taking anti depressants. How old is he? AND my no means take just the advice of his teacher. He might just have a behavioral problem that needs to be worked on. And for some teachers and drs. the easy way out is to put them on add meds. Be careful and dont waste too much time. I knew a little boy like that. I dated his father for a couple of months. and the little boy didnt talk to me or his dad at that. when you talked to him he acted strange in a sense he wouldnt make eye contact but hed be looking at you through the corner of his eye and then take off running about 100 laps in the front yard. Good luck

hi- i'm going to give the point of view from someone who had to take drugs for ADD.

i was prescribed, and took ritilan for nearly 8 years.

when i took the drug, it would make me feel very focused, and would, in fact, from time to time, make me pay attention.

after 8 years of taking the drug i was "cured" and didn't need it anymore.

i was 5 when i started taking the drug, i was 13 when i stopped.

of course i was "cured" i was no longer a hyper 5 year old child..i was a brooding 13year old adolescent.

when i was younger, i acted out in class, had to be moved around, back of the class, talked to myself, and goofed off alot.

....while i was on the ritilan.

my advice to you is: try and find a activity or "hobby" that your son enjoys, or has a serious intrest in. by giving him some outlet, whether it be a physical, or mental workout-it will be just that, a work-out, and leave will help to make him more calm when he needs to be, also, he will gain confidence in himself as his prowess in his"activity" increases.

one other thing- i'm now 27 years old. despite the fact that i have a reasonably healthy diet, i have numerous digestive problems..i've not heard of any studies yet, but you gotta figure this- alot of those "medications" (inlcuding ritilan) are just clinical grade speed... every seen a speed junkie after 8 years on the drug???? they do not look healthy!

oh- almost forgot... your son's school thinks he has ADD?? are there licensed peditricians&phycologists working for the school? my guess is no.. so please dont take their "diagnosis" as a solid reason for giving your son drugs.

hope this was of help.

read about indigo children.
he's probably bored as you know what at school because he already knows what the teacher is trying to teach.
teaching and the public school system hasn't yet cought up with the kids these days.

characteristics of an indigo child:
highly sensitive
excessive amounts of energy
bores easily- may appear to have short attention span
requires emotionally stable and secure adults around him/her
will resist authority if it's not democratically oriented
has preferred ways of learning, particularly in reading & math
learns from an exploratory level, resisting rote memory or just being a listener
cannot sit still unless absorbed in something of their own intrerest
is very compassionate; has many fears such as death and loss of loved ones
may become easily frustrated because they have big ideas but lack the resources or people to assist them in carrying these tasks to fruition
if they experience failure early, may give up and develop permanent learning blocks

books by jan tober and lee carroll
they are 'gifted' children.

Hi, You need to take your son to a Doctor, it seems like he might have ADD or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), drugs aren't necessarily bad for this, but you need to get a doctors opinion first. Get your son the help he needs, if it is in fact ADD, this is serious and he needs help, fast! Don't waste time, give your son the chance to live as normal as possible.

Good luck

Drugs are bad. Do you want to change your child's personality? Why don't you just hook him up to a machine and turn him into a good little robot? Why was ADD never a problem before? Lot's of kids have a hard time paying attention, it's normal kid behavior... Doctors are using kids for profit.

Talk to your doctor and see about putting him on medication called Adderall (I believe that is how you spell it). I took that in high school because I was diagnosed with being ADD and it truly helped me focus, I actually made honor roll. But take him to a therapist to make sure that he is actually ADD. They can help pin point what the actual "issue" is. I hope this helps and good luck!

My niece is ADD. She takes grape-seed extract. It's in pill form. Helps her out alot! My sister gets it in our local Wal-mart in the same department as other vitamins. Also, you may want to look into terrets syndrome. My husband and bro-in-law have terrets. Take him to a doctor before putting him on any pills.

Don't put him on medication unless you want to start a lifelong answer for a shortterm solution.

Diet is the best solution. There is ample information on the web.
